Special Economic Zones

The idea of Special Economic Zones as hubs for foreign direct investment was pioneered in the 80’s by Chinese Shenzhen, which has grown from a tiny village to a settlement of 10 million people since.

Pakistan has been progressing towards more liberalized trade regulations within the framework of Special Economic Zones, creating its first Export Processing Zones in Karachi, Risalpur and Sialkot. Ministry of Finance appointed a committee to overlook EPZ expansions and facilitate industrialization within these zones. SEZs require structural, legal and fiscal reforms and amendments to create enabling environment capable of attracting sizeable FDI.
